What causes someone to say this? So, what is it about psychiatric medications, and stimulants in particular, that scares folks? Here are a few things we often hear:. The fact is, there is a very important place for using stimulants in the treatment of ADHD, but they do need to be part of a comprehensive treatment plan that is monitored closely.
They may be very effective in conjunction with critical behavioral management of the problem, but they may well have side effects. Jump to minutes to hear Dr. Before we begin, we need to remember that ADHD is a complex problem that involves inattention and distraction, hyperactivity and impulsivity.
The inattentive symptoms result in an inability to stay on task, trouble completing projects, delayed comprehension, and disorganization in time management and setting priorities. If hyperactive, these kids can have problems with fidgetiness, impatience and sitting still.
The impulsivity results in making reckless decisions, and getting in trouble with others by interrupting and being annoying. The treatment for ADHD first and foremost involves providing a structured environment that helps to minimize distractions, and provide daily routine activities to keep the child focused.
This behavioral piece can be especially helpful for the child, and requires work both at home and school. But, there may also be a place for medications that can help immensely with the core skills that kids need to learn. Bottom line is the learning of the skills, routines and good habits. Actually, stimulants do not have any dangerous effects on the brain or normal hearts in kids and adults.
Over the past decade, we have moved away from worrying about these medications being toxic to the nervous system, to the most recent data suggesting they are actually protective. Taken in prescribed doses, stimulants are among the safest medications we can give kids.
If a kid has a heart condition, the stimulant could cause a rhythm disturbance; but, with proper pediatric guidance, they are quite safe. In fact, a recent FDA study showed stimulants to be very safe for the heart. If you compare their use to antibiotics for infections, or prednisone a steroid that is often used for poison ivy, the risks of the others are HUGE compared to stimulants.
In fact, there are many cases of severe allergic reactions like the closing of the airway with antibiotics, and serious psychiatric complications with prednisone, and we give those to our kids without thinking. True, stimulants can infrequently cause problems with a select group of kids, such as the worsening of appetite, and sleep disturbances. However, with careful monitoring, these problems can be eliminated, largely by adjusting the timing the medications are taken.
And, you may be at risk for infection and a large scar. On the other hand, if you put stitches in first, you reduce the risk of infection, quicken the pace of healing that is done by the bodyand minimize the size of the scar.
Think of stimulants as those stitches. Over time, kids with ADHD who are treated with stimulants have fewer problems with oppositionality, depression, smoking and even being arrested than those who are not treated.
Some stimulants, like cocaine and coffee caffeineare pretty addictive. They also cause withdrawal if you use them daily then stop. The truth is that stimulants used judiciously in the lowest doses possible, and monitored by parents, do not cause addiction by themselves. The answer from scientific literature says yes, but interestingly, this is likely due to self-medication for the terrible feelings that result from untreated ADHD.
Recent research shows that kids who are treated with stimulants early on as part of their overall management, are LESS LIKELY to develop smoking and substance abuse issues in adolescence compared with kids who have not had stimulants as part of the plan. The effect to reduce substance abuse only lasts, however, if the ADHD child continues on his or her medication into maturity as a young adult.
We all run faster and jump higher with stimulants. This is because they increase attention and persistence in all of us. However, they work best in those who have ADHD. They decrease hyperactivity, impulsivity and distractibility, and in doing so, help these kids learn positive new habits that minimize their frazzled experience with life. It is not pleasant or euphoric! They can pay better attention, and learn the skills they need to learn.
There are some parents who push their kids to overachieve; they may misinterpret lack of motivation or achievement for ADHD.
However, for kids who have a bone fide disability like ADHD, they really are a treatment, not an enhancement. And, for the college kids who buy stimulants to help them perform better on tests, the same rule applies—they may give them an unfair advantage, or evolve into drug abuse for some. Speaking of substance abuse, for any teen or young adult who does have an addiction, there are good alternatives to stimulants to improve attention, albeit not as effective. Some non-stimulant medications, like Strattera or Wellbutrin, may be used if stimulants are excluded.
There are some youth with addictions who will take almost anything to get high, and this includes stimulants. So, what is the take-home message? Stimulants in combination with a comprehensive plan for a kid properly diagnosed with ADHD may be a godsend for the child, parents, family and teachers. They really can help when properly used, and result in longer-term, sustained improvements for the growing child with ADHD.

And how they coped while they had to be on it? I'm on a tapering dose but even though I'm pushing getting off of it as fast as physically possible, it is making my adhd about 5 times worse than normal.
Also, is there any kind of link between having more adhd symptoms if you have vitimin defincienies like hypokalemia low potassium , or dehydration, or low magnessium, or anemia? Also as an update from my last post on here, I been able to atleast get a few lists made on steps i need to take to get things done.

Thanks again! I can't wait till i'm done with this med. Because I fear, if i were to, I would end up in a temp hospital or something. For even having the thoughts. And I know anti depressants wont help.
Vyvanse seemed to help a lot, but with prednisone it's an awful mix. But I'm glad that I'm not alone, and It makes me feel better knowing that this med can do that, and also affect me causing more adhd. I'm 5mg lower now total of 20mg of it a day now , and i noticed I'm able to stay a bit more focused, and i'm not constantly on the go. I've always been the more internal adhd person. But lately when i stoped the vyvanse, and am still on prednisone I've had the more outward adhd I have that some all during my life, but never to a degree that became troublesome in that area of things.
Yikes, and yeah, I've been spending money like it's nothing. If my card says I can spend, i spend. If it goes through and is accepted, then I do so. I even go through the store just putting things in the basket like no limits. And it's not until after I get to the check out that I find out I went way over what I have. I take Adderall XR 20mg. I do notice a difference with the prednizone. Because those who matter.. And those who mind.. I'm scared he's gonna say i'm just trying to get more. Because anytime I've tried bringing up how it's not working like it used to he talks over me, and repeats the same prescription as before.
I may just be being overly sensitive. I would request someone else if I wasn't so keen on not changing. My fear there is what if the doc is worse than the one I already have? Then I would end up with a worse doc and an aid that cares nothing.
And very confused. Are family doctors allowed to prescribe adhd meds? If so, is there a way i could swap that to my family doctor? As a kid i was on ritalin, and aderall never for longer than a week due to my parents bias opinions.

I thought maybe if i wrote him something and it's all i wrote, he wouldn't be able to over pass it so easily like he does when we are face to face 'chatting'.
Still on the prednisone too but on a lower dose , and the vyvanse is helping with the adhd symptoms to where i can atleast do things -not very productivly, but still..
I'm far past due for a blood test anyways. My pdoc told me this about ritalin.. I was diagnoised with crohn's back in august area. But i guess this time was worse than the rest, as I was terrified i had pid and it was gonna kill me if i didn't get medical attention But with that my colon isn't grabbing all the nutrience it's needing. Landed me in the hospital a few times just for needing iv bags of potassium, and magnesium, and sodium chloride I've fought dehyrdation and the water bags since i was 8 so, that was nothing new , and a few blood transfusions.
And the blood tests are to make sure I'm not going too low, or too high in things. Such as potassium which is fatal either way. And to make sure my magnesium stays in the right area because it has something to do with if it's too low my body wont deal with the potassuim or any other vitiamen things and i will take it, and they will just pass right through. Tho when I was weening myself off of cymbalta I would make a note on how much i pourd out each night, and repeat it until I was pretty much weened off of it.

You do not need anyone's permission to change Pdocs or any other type of doctor. If your insurance is university insurance or student coverage or whatever just make an appointment with someone else. Your Pdoc would irritate me to no end. I do not waste my time on Pdocs who do not listen and are not responsive to my needs. You have wasted a lot of time on this guy. Well it was a good idea about the note for record keeping purposes, but it's not a good way to get a more immediate response.
Who re-prescribed the Vyvanse on the same dose, the same Pdoc your talking about here?
